After Jihadists began gaining territory in Mali in 2012, the extremist group issued a ban on music. As a result, many of Mali’s musicians fled the war-torn northern region out of fear.
Mali’s annual music festival — The Festival in the Desert — was cancelled in 2013, 2014, and 2015. But not all of Mali’s musicians gave up, instead forming The Caravan of Peace, a group of traveling musicians who play concerts wherever it is safe.
Created to celebrate Music Freedom Day, this short film accompanies the feature length documentary They Will have to Kill us First. The Caravan will play SXSW in Austin, Texas next week, and then will tour the world in an effort to raise awareness for the struggle of the Malian people.
